Mexico weighs increasing fracking to reduce reliance on US gas, FT reports

Mexico is in early talks with private companies to expand fracking in an effort to reduce its heavy reliance on U.S. natural gas, which currently supplies 72% of its demand. The move comes amid growing trade tensions and fears that former President Trump could use this energy dependence as political leverage. Discussions are still preliminary, but companies have shown investment interest.

RBN Energy noted that U.S. gas imports—mainly from the Permian and Eagle Ford Basins—have tripled over the past decade, while Mexico’s domestic production has declined, with much of its gas deemed unusable due to high nitrogen content. Mexico is also considering doubling its strategic gas storage capacity. Most of its gas imports arrive by pipeline and are used for electricity generation and industrial activities.
