With LNG Exports Nigh, Alberta Hikes Gas Reserve Estimate

Alberta now holds six times more proved, recoverable natural gas reserves than previously estimated, according to a new study commissioned by the Alberta Energy Regulator. This major boost—bringing proved reserves to 130 trillion cubic feet from just 24 Tcf two years ago—positions Alberta as the 9th largest global holder of such reserves, up from 15th. The increase is credited to successful exploration in formations like the Montney, Duvernay, and Deep Basin, as well as improved extraction technologies.

This comes as Western Canada prepares for its first LNG exports via the Shell-led LNG Canada project, set to begin this summer. Canadian officials emphasize that Alberta’s expanded reserves could help meet growing global demand for natural gas, provided that export infrastructure keeps pace.

“Alberta’s energy sector has embraced technology and innovation,” said Premier Danielle Smith, while Alberta Energy Minister Brian Jean highlighted the province’s “Texas-sized” gas potential. RBN’s Martin King also noted the significance of the reserves in attracting investment and securing Alberta’s long-term energy future.
