Crude to Gas Ratio
The crude oil-to-natural gas ratio is a measure of the relative value of hydrocarbons in a liquid form (e.g. crude oil) and hydrocarbons in a gaseous form (e.g. natural gas). The ratio is calculated by dividing the price of crude oil in dollars per barrel ($/Bbl) by natural gas in dollars per million BTU ($/MMBtu). The statistic shown here uses the front-month futures contract price for CME/NYMEX crude oil at Cushing versus the natural gas price at Henry Hub. This ratio is an excellent indicator of the market dynamics between crude and gas in the U.S.
When the ratio is high that means that crude oil is worth far more than natural gas. Producers are motivated to shift drilling budgets from gas to crude. The spread between gas and NGLs (which are influenced by crude prices) tends to widen, improving the value of natural gas processing. When the ratio is low, it gas is high relative to crude, and the opposite pressures impact the markets.

Seaway Freeport Crude Oil Exports Reach Multi-Year High as SPR Draws Accelerate
As discussed in the Crude Voyager Report for the week ended May 29, exports out of the U.S. Gulf Coast (USGC) averaged 5.4 MMb/d, with strength seen across a number of terminals. In the Houston region, the Seaway Freeport Terminal recorded export activity for the seventh consecutive week. While only one Aframax cargo was seen, the terminal's seven-week streak represents its longest period of uninterrupted export activity since 2023, signaling a notable increase in utilization compared with the sporadic loadings observed in recent years.
U.S. Propane-to-Crude Ratio Rebounds to Start June
After falling to its lowest monthly average since October 2023 in April, the U.S. propane-to-WTI crude ratio is showing signs of recovery. The ratio started June higher than May's average, as propane regained some ground relative to crude oil. While it's too early to call a sustained turnaround, the early June rebound bears watching.
