With the war in Ukraine ongoing and Europe largely cut off or quitting Russian natural gas imports, many feared that global gas prices would skyrocket this winter, but prices have fizzled out instead and are at their lowest level since September 2021. That’s not to say gas prices are low, as they are still well above historic norms and high enough to incentivize LNG imports and the development of future LNG capacity. But despite losing its largest gas supplier, and prices running up in the months ahead of this winter, Europe appears to be in much better shape than it was last winter and gas prices have been relatively calm and on the downswing. So why is that? The difference between this winter and last largely boils down to storage inventories and the ability to attract LNG cargoes. In today’s RBN blog, we look at the European gas market, the impact of U.S. LNG supplies, and what it all means for developing LNG projects.
As we’ve said numerous times over the past few years, the global gas market is fundamentally bullish and even with prices falling now, it’s simply unprecedented in the modern era for prices to stay at this level for this long. Prices in Europe, marked by the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF; orange line in Figure 1), have averaged more than $37/MMBtu since September 2021 and prices in Asia, marked by the Japan Korea Marker (JKM; green line), have averaged more than $33/MMBtu. (Before the recent runup in prices, the previous single-day record settlement in either market was just $19.70/MMBtu, which JKM recorded on January 14, 2021, as transportation constraints in the Panama Canal caused a shipping nightmare for Asian LNG consumers.) Current prices are at their lowest level since September 2021, but while a combination of high storage inventories, mild weather and abundant LNG imports have prevented Europe from a disastrous winter and relieved pressure on prices, the continent is not out of the woods yet. Europe is facing an uncertain energy future — one almost surely with significantly diminished Russian gas — and is still very much figuring out how all the pieces of that future will come together.
About the song
“Music is Love” was written by David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Neil Young, and is the opening track on side one of David Crosby’s debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name. The song was released as a single in April 1971 and was a minor hit on FM underground radio, nudging its way to #95 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. The song has a raga/drone effect that starts with the melody played on a drop-D tuned guitar, followed by the chorus of “everybody's saying that music is love” sung by Crosby with Graham Nash and Neil Young harmonizing. The tune draws you in with a repeating incantation of a tapestry of harmonies that Crosby was so good at arranging. It serves as a great intro, perfectly setting up the rest of the LP. Personnel on the record were: David Crosby (lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar), Neil Young (harmony vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, congas, vibraphone), and Graham Nash (harmony vocals).
If I Could Only Remember My Name was recorded between 1970-71 at Wally Heider in San Francisco and A&M Studios in Hollywood. Produced by David Crosby, the album was released in February 1971. It went to #12 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The LP has never gone out of print, and a 50th anniversary re-issue was released in October 2021 with outtakes and demos included. Director Cameron Crowe used the album’s title for his 2019 documentary on Crosby. When the recording was being done on the album in San Francisco, members of the Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Santana, and Quicksilver Messenger Service, who were all recording for their projects at Wally Heider's or nearby at the time, dropped by and added their contributions to the LP. It became a perfect representation of psychedelic folk music. One can imagine smelling patchouli oil and strawberry incense and listening to the burbling of bongs while listening to the LP. Two singles were released from the album.
David Crosby was an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was a founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, in addition to having a successful career as a solo artist. In 1964 in Los Angeles, Crosby, along with Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, and Chris Hillman, formed The Byrds. Crosby was fired from the band in 1968. He formed Crosby, Stills, & Nash (later with Neil Young) in 1969. That group splintered off into various duo and solo projects in the mid-70s. Over the years C,S,N &Y would perform and make additional records together, inevitably having a short shelve-life due to group in-fighting and bickering. Crosby would continue his solo career making records and touring until his death on January 19, 2023. With The Byrds he released six studio albums, two EPs, and 15 singles. With Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young he released eight studio albums, five live albums, six compilation albums, and 19 singles. As a solo artist he released thirteen studio albums, and eleven singles.
We at RBN are saddened to have another recent death of an iconic figure in rock and roll, with the passing of David Crosby. Thanks for the music and the love, Mr. Crosby. We hope that you are teaching heavenly harmonies to the angels.
