Australia’s Woodside Energy said August 5 that it would acquire OCI Global’s clean ammonia project in Beaumont, TX, for $2.35 billion, citing expectations that global ammonia demand would double by 2050, with lower-carbon ammonia making up about two-thirds of total demand.
As discussed in this week's Hydrogen Billboard report, Phase 1 of the project (see map below) is under construction with a design capacity of 1.1 million MT per year. First ammonia production, derived from natural gas, is targeted for 2025. Lower-carbon ammonia production, derived from natural gas paired with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), is targeted for 2026 following the start of CCS operations.
