The diesel crack has become a key focal point for the market. After surging more than 11% last week to $92.75/bbl, 264% above year-ago levels, it soared to close at a record-high of $99.125/bbl yesterday (yellow dashed circle in chart below), bringing the $100/bbl mark within striking distance. That is an extraordinary level for a margin that historically has traded at a fraction of current values.

At its core, the diesel crack signals scarcity in the global distillate market. At the same time, U.S. diesel exports are running at record levels, suggesting that strong international demand is pulling available barrels into an increasingly undersupplied global market rather than allowing domestic inventories to rebuild.
