Texas moved a step closer to controlling the permitting process for the wells used in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a proposal in June to give the state primacy over its Class VI wells. A public hearing will be held July 24 and public comments will be accepted through July 31. A final rule is expected to be issued in the fall.
Class VI wells are required for the permanent geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). To date, only Louisiana, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming (dark-green states in map below) have been granted primacy, although a handful of other states are going through the application process.
