Commercial operations have begun at Liberty Solar, a 134-MW solar project about 50 miles north of Houston, underscoring the rapid expansion of solar generation in the state. 

The project is connected to the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO) power grid, which serves parts of 15 states in the Midwest and South, including a small portion of Texas. It was developed by Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar.

Although the solar farm is not connected to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages the power grid for about 90% of Texas, ERCOT data shows that solar generation has risen significantly this year.

Solar generation in the ERCOT market was up 44% for the first nine months of the year, with year-on-year increases each month (see graphic below).
