MEG Energy has received board approval to proceed with a project to raise the production capacity for its Christina Lake oil-sands site (see map below) in northeast Alberta by 25 Mb/d to 135 Mb/d.
The $440 million project is expected to be ready in 2027; work is to start next year. MEG wants to host another expansion project over 2028-2030. Christina Lake first came onstream in 2008 when it began producing at its design capacity of 3 Mb/d. Next year, production is expected to average 95-105 Mb/d because of planned work in Q2.
The Christina Lake facility is located in the southern Athabasca region, south of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operation currently has regulatory approvals to produce about 210 Mb/d.
Some 97% of Canada’s oil comes from the oil sands, and about 96% of oil-sands are located in the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo area which is home to the largest oil sands deposit in the world.
