An explosion and fire were reported Friday at Pemex’s 340 Mb/d Deer Park refinery in Houston. It is unclear how much damage the fire has caused and how long the refinery will be offline.
The Deer Park refinery is one of the largest U.S. importers of Maya crude because Pemex’s domestic refineries (with a combined capacity of 1.6 MMb/d) are capable of refining only a small portion of the heavy-sour crude the company produces. Pemex’s heavy-sour crude benchmark accounts for a larger share of the crude slate at Deer Park than at any other U.S. refinery — in the final months of 2022, about 30% of the crude refined at Deer Park has been Maya. Pemex took full ownership interest of the refinery in January 2022 after acquiring the remaining stake from Shell.
The fire is not expected to have a major impact on crude or product prices, given the Gulf Coast's overall capacity, but it could prove bullish for refining margins.
