An arbitration hearing to resolve the merits of applications from ExxonMobil and China’s CNOOC for the Right Of First Refusal (ROFR) over Hess’ equity in their joint-venture  Stabroek project in Guyana has been scheduled for May 2025.

A decision from the arbitration panel is expected in the following three months, according to an 8K filing from Chevron. The ROFR petitions follow an agreement in October 2023 for Chevron to purchase Hess for $60 billion. ExxonMobil and CNOOC want a chance to buy Hess’s stake before the deal closes.

Chevron and Hess have argued that the ROFR contained in the joint-venture Stabroek operating agreement does not apply to the merger which was originally set to close in the first half of this year.
