The most significant operating expense for energy pipelines is the power needed for pumps for liquids and compressors for natural gas to keep the molecules moving. So, increasingly expensive power costs will be a challenge for midstreamers. And when gas and power prices surge as a result of inclement weather, it can be costly for pipelines. To address rising costs and peak day risk, many midstream companies have enrolled in demand-response programs with power providers, where they agree to temporarily cut back flows on some of their assets in exchange for cost savings or a financial incentive. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss the strategies that pipelines are using to boost their operations and lower costs.
Join us at our historic 20th School of Energy!
School of Energy: Foundations is a two day, in person conference designed to help energy professionals better understand the forces shaping crude oil, natural gas, NGLs, refined products, and petrochemicals.
Attendees will learn from RBN experts, work with Excel based analytical models, participate in Q&As, and network with industry peers.
Build the foundation to better navigate volatile energy markets.
Let’s start with prices. U.S. power prices, measured by average revenue per kilowatt-hour (kWh), rose 5% between July 2024 and July 2025, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The transportation sector saw the largest increase (8.5%), followed by industrial (6.2%), residential (5.2%) and commercial (4.8%). (Pipeline operations traditionally fall under the transportation or industrial sectors.) As shown in Figure 2 below, the biggest increase was in the District of Columbia (24.5%). By comparison, Texas saw only a 2% increase over the same period.
