Blue ammonia production at Woodside Energy’s Beaumont New Ammonia facility in southeast Texas (see map below) is not likely to commence this year due to construction issues, acting CEO Liz Westcott said this week during the company’s 2026 Sustainability Briefing.
Beaumont New Ammonia began producing traditional gray hydrogen in late 2025. Blue hydrogen production was expected to begin in H2 2026.
“In terms of … the timing for lower-carbon, we have third-party suppliers that are doing the auto thermal reforming (ATR) to create the hydrogen that allows you to be lower-carbon. That also requires CCS, and it's those (ATR) facilities in general … that (are) running behind schedule from the suppliers,” she said.
As noted in this week’s Hydrogen Billboard, Westcott remained upbeat about blue ammonia’s potential but said the market “continues to evolve” and was developing slower than initially expected, although demand is projected to come from power generation, marine fuels and hydrogen carrier applications.
Beaumont New Ammonia has a production capacity of 1.1 million MT/year and is designed to support growing demand for ammonia, lower-carbon ammonia and hydrogen-adjacent products.
