The future of a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project under development in the Midwest became more uncertain this week after Wolf Carbon Solutions withdrew its petition to build a 95-mile section of a carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline in Iowa.
Wolf said in its filing that it would make a determination about the project’s fate after “more certainty exists concerning its plans to proceed.”
The pipeline would run from an ADM ethanol plant in Cedar Rapids to the Illinois border, with a connection to a second ADM ethanol plant in Clinton (red stars in map below). The pipeline system would connect to an existing ADM sequestration site that utilizes the Mount Simon sequestration area in south-central Illinois.
The future of the Illinois section of the project was already in doubt after Wolf submitted a motion in November 2023 to withdraw its pipeline application to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Wolf said at the time it intended to refile the application with the ICC in early 2024 and that it remained committed to the project, but to date the application has not been refiled.
