Wolf Carbon Solutions submitted a motion last week to withdraw its application to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) for the development and operation of a carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline system known as the Mt. Simon Hub. Wolf said it intends to refile the application with the ICC in early 2024 and that it remains committed to the project. Construction is planned to begin in Q2 2025, with operations commencing in Q4 2025, according to the project’s website.
The proposed project (dashed purple line in map below) between Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Wolf would capture CO2 emissions from a pair of ADM ethanol plants in Iowa, with the potential to serve third-party customers as well. The CO2 would be shipped on a pipeline system of less than 300 miles to an existing ADM sequestration site that utilizes the Mount Simon sequestration area in south-central Illinois (gray oval at bottom right of map). The pipeline would have the capacity to move up to 12 MMtpa (634 MMcf/d) of CO2. ICC staff said in October that the permit should be denied because Wolf did not have a final agreement in place with ADM.
