U.S. oil and gas rig count gained three rigs to 591 for the week ending September 11 according to Baker Hughes data, as gains in the Bakken (+5), the Eagle Ford (+1) and the Niobrara (+1) more than offset a one-rig decline in Gulf of Mexico and a three-rig decline in All Other. This was a rather unexpected move in the Bakken rig count, which had not posted a weekly rig gain of five or more since 2016. Gas-directed rigs climbed to 132 (+2) and oil-directed rigs edged up to 450 (+1), while miscellaneous rigs were unchanged at 9. Total U.S. rig count is up 29 over the last 90 days and now stands 52 rigs above this week in 2025.
