U.S. rail transportation of renewable diesel (RD) grew by about 50% from early 2022 to late 2023, with nearly all of the volumes headed for the West Coast, according to new PADD-level data available in the March edition of the EIA’s Petroleum Supply Monthly.

RD is a transportation and heating fuel that is chemically equivalent to conventional diesel and is produced using fats, oils, or greases. Most of the RD volumes head to the West Coast (yellow sections of top graphic) because California, Oregon and Washington are the only states with active clean fuel programs that incentivize RD consumption.
