Energy Transfer is expanding its NGL asset base in Texas with several projects. The company recently took FID on its Frac IX, a 165 Mb/d fractionator at Mont Belvieu, expected in service in Q4 2026. This adds to the existing capacity of Fracs I–VIII which totals 1.15 MMb/d. The company’s most recent fractionator, Frac VIII started up in Q2 2023 with a capacity of 150 Mb/d. The addition of this fractionation unit will boost the company’s supply of NGLs for the expansion of their export terminal.
Energy Transfer is also in the process of expanding their Lone Star Express pipeline. According to the company’s August investor presentation, the upgrades they are performing will expand the current 800 Mb/d capacity by 90 Mb/d, an increase of just over 11%. This expansion will increase the company’s ability to transport raw mix NGLs from the Permian to Mont Belvieu. This will help prevent any bottlenecks as the company expands its processing capacity in the Permian.
Finally, the company has been in the permitting process for a new steam cracker adjacent to its current Nederland assets. The cracker will have a capacity of up to 2.4 MMtpa and will take ethane feedstock. The addition of this cracker will expand Energy Transfer’s business into petrochemicals for the first time and enhance the company’s existing NGL infrastructure.
