Canadian government owned Trans Mountain pipeline is headed for a critical regulatory hearing Friday (1/12) with the CER (Canadian Energy Regulator). Late last year the Trans Mountain Corp. requested a construction variance from the CER to finish a final segment of the already 97% complete pipeline expansion project. The route change request comes because of drilling challenges the company is facing boring through bedrock that has proved to be more difficult than anticipated. Trans Mountain is requesting to use different diameter pipe, wall thickness and coating for a 2.3-km (~1.4-mi) stretch of pipeline. The CER denied the company’s initial request in December 2023 citing safety concerns.
