Summer has officially begun and refiners are wasting no time ramping up inputs to produce road fuels for the summer driving season. Today's EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report covering crude and refined products fundamentals for the week ended June 16 showed several bullish indicators related to the refining sector.
Refinery inputs, although down 100 Mb/d relative to last week, currently stand at 16.47 MMbbl/d while fuel inventories rest near 5-year lows. Finished motor gasoline demand was up 200 Mb/d to 9.4 MMb/d while U.S. diesel demand also saw an increase in demand by 400 Mb/d. Distillate inventories grew by 400 Mbbl but remain near the bottom of the five-year range as the average price of retail diesel rose by 3 cents to $3.82/gal.
