California’s so-called “Duck Curve” continues to get steeper as increases in renewable power generation push net demand — total demand minus wind and solar production — close to zero during the daytime hours, according to California Independent System Operator (CAISO) data.
Net demand has moved lower in recent years during the middle of the day as more renewable power has become available to the grid. Net demand dipped to around 1,000 MW during the afternoon of March 14 (light-blue line in graphic below), bottoming out at 830 MW at 3 pm PDT. That’s far below the same date in 2023 (purple line) and 2022 (light-green line). (Note that solar generation was far below normal on March 14, 2023, so net demand was higher than normal.)
