The rapid increase in battery storage capacity over the past few years is helping to balance supply and demand within the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market. Storage capacity stood at 500 MW in 2020 but had reached 5,600 MW by July 2023 and currently stands at more than 6,600 MW, according to CAISO’s online dashboard.
Morning power generation from batteries peaked at 3,423 MW at 6:50 am on March 21 (dashed black circle and red line), accounting for 14.7% of overall supply. During the evening, generation from batteries reached 4,106 MW at 8:15 pm (dashed purple oval), accounting for 16% of overall power supply. Those figures are well above the same date in 2021, 2022 and 2023 (blue, yellow and green lines, respectively.)
