In EIA’s Weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week ended April 5, preliminary U.S. imports of crude oil from Mexico dropped to 209 Mb/d (red dot in right graph), the lowest level since EIA started recording weekly stats in 2010. As shown in the left graph, the last time the average annual exports were at this level was 1977.
Reports last week indicated that Pemex cancelled up to 436 MB/d of crude exports for April and at least 330 Mb/d for May, presumably to retain those supplies for its refinery system, including the new Dos Bocas refinery. The April cancellation includes a 122 MB/d reduction of heavy Maya crude, a key crude oil for Gulf Coast refiners. Pemex reported in April that its crude oil production in February had fallen to its lowest level in 45 years.
