A small fraction of crude oil that is imported into the U.S. is re-exported onto seaborne vessels. The latest monthly data from the U.S. Census Bureau included in the Crude Voyager report shows that nearly 426 Mb/d of foreign crude was re-exported in March 2023, up 262 Mb/d from similar shipments noted in February.

The data series also highlights a concurrent rise in the export of foreign crude oil alongside the peak domestic crude oil exports this year. The figure below show that the U.S. has exported over 225 Mb/d of foreign oil in Q1 2023, nearly double the shipments that were loaded throughout 2022. The majority of these volumes were under 25 API gravity, or Heavy Sour crude oil grade (Maya, Cold Lake, Western Canadian Select).
