PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. regional grid operator, received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) this week to expedite the review of up to 50 new power generation projects across the 13 states it serves. The decision comes in response to rapidly increasing forecasts for energy demand, primarily driven by the growth of data centers.

FERC said PJM’s Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI), which provides a one-time interconnection review and is designed to get projects connected faster, “reasonably addresses” possible resource adequacy shortfalls driven by significant load growth, power plant retirements and delays in bringing new resources online.

PJM’s updated forecast for load growth through 2045 (gold line in chart below), which was included in its FERC application, showed significant increases in future years compared with its 2024 forecast (light-blue line).
