A Gulf of Mexico lease sale scheduled for September 27 will include millions of acres that had been removed from the sale in August by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a federal judge ruled late last week.

Lease Sale 261 will make 73 million acres of offshore tracts (see map below) available for drilling leases. BOEM reduced that area to 67 million acres in August as part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit over whale protections filed in federal court. The judge’s order restores the original coverage area of the lease sale and also blocks other revisions made by BOEM, including new speed limits and requirements for personnel on industry vessels in some of the areas to be leased.
