Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) said May 18 that it filed the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for its project in Central Newfoundland. The project would reuse brownfield lands, repurpose the Port of Botwood (the closest deepwater port in North America to Europe) and harness the region’s wind resources to produce green hydrogen and ammonia.
The EVREC project (see map below), a joint venture between Abraxas Power Corp. and EDF, is expected to include 3+ gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind generation, supported by energy storage and associated infrastructure. As noted in this week’s Hydrogen Billboard report, at full capacity the project is expected to produce 180,000 MT/year of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)-certified hydrogen or up to 1 million MT/year of RFNBO-certified ammonia for export to global markets. RFNBO certification ensures that the hydrogen and ammonia produced at EVREC meet European Union sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction standards.
