After languishing below $8/MMbtu during most of 2024, Dutch TTF (title transfer facility, the European marker hub price), has spiked up to almost $13/MMbtu in the past week. Ukrainian war jitters and preparation for winter demand are blamed for the increase.
That is very good for any exporter of U.S. LNG to European markets. With the Henry Hub price averaging only $2.00/MMbtu so far in August, the difference between TTF and Henry Hub has blown out from an average of $7.40/MMbtu January-to-July, to $11/MMbtu month-to-date August (right graph below), the highest level since November 2023.
That is still a long way from the lofty average of $34/MMbtu for 2022 following Ukraine invasion TTF price spike that year (left graph below), but it could be a harbinger of things to come this winter season if tensions stay high and cold weather materializes in a few weeks.
