The most hyped-up topic in energy markets recently is the anticipated demand for power required by data centers to enable increased use of artificial intelligence. Such forecasts prompt a host of questions, such as how much additional power will be needed, how will the power be generated (fossil fuels or renewables) and, increasingly, will the data centers pull that additional power directly from the grid or will it be generated on-site ‘behind the fence’.

Given the scope and criticality of data centers’ power consumption, developers of these multi-billion-dollar projects prioritize two factors above even affordability: reliability and time-to-market.
