The buildout of data centers across the U.S. has made competition for prime locations fierce, which has resulted in some developers opting to repurpose industrial buildings instead of building new facilities.

The latest is data center developer Patmos, which announced Thursday it would convert the former Kansas City Star printing press into its flagship site. The 400,000-square-foot campus, which sits on five acres near downtown Kansas City, opened in 2006 and once housed four state-of-the-art printing presses. The Star left the building in 2021 as part of its parent company’s bankruptcy reorganization. The site was previously considered as a potential location for a new ballpark for the Kansas City Royals.
