September has been a big month for advocates of direct air capture (DAC), with significant developments announced for a pair of Texas projects being advanced by 1PointFive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Occidental.
The Stratos DAC project under construction in Ector County in West Texas was issued draft permits by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for three Class VI injection wells, which are required for long-term sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). The draft permits are the first issued by the EPA for CO2 injection wells in Texas. A public-comment period about the draft permits will run through October 7, with a public hearing scheduled for October 3. 1PointFive has said the Stratos project will be able to capture 500,000 MT/year of CO2 and cost at least $1 billion. The project is under construction and is expected to be operational in mid-2025.
