Out of the blue, Plains All American has scooped up 100% of the EPIC Crude Pipeline. Plains had previously announced an agreement to buy a 55% stake in the Permian-to-Corpus-Christi pipeline from Diamondback Energy and Kinetik Holdings, and on November 5, it said it had closed on a deal to buy the other 45% from Ares Management. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss what the acquisition means for Plains, as well as a possible expansion of EPIC and the planned rebranding of the pipe.

Roundabout! - Canada-To-Rockies Crude Flows Reshaping The PADD 4 Guernsey Market

Canadian crude output is rising, requiring new export routes. As traditional pathways face constraints, the U.S. Rockies—especially the Guernsey, WY hub—are emerging as key corridors for moving Canadian heavy crude to downstream markets, including the Gulf Coast.

Let’s start with a refresher on what Plains already owns and, after that, provide some history on EPIC Crude, which stretches 800 miles from West Texas to the Gulf Coast. As shown in Figure 1 below, Plains owns and operates the 600-Mb/d Basin Pipeline (dark-green line) from Wink, TX, to the Cushing, OK, storage hub and controls major regional pipelines like Mesa (dark-pink line) and Sunrise (light-pink line) that connect Midland, TX, to Colorado City, TX. Plains also owns 40% of the 440-Mb/d BridgeTex Pipeline (orange line), which moves crude from Colorado City to east Houston, and it has an interest in Wink to Webster Pipeline LLC, the joint venture (JV) owner of the 650-mile, 1.5-MMb/d Wink to Webster pipeline (green line) that we detailed in My Way.
