The average spread between isobutane and normal butane was just under 10.5 c/gal in January 2024.  Following the start-up of the Next Wave ethylene to alkylate project in March 2024, the spread then widened substantially, peaking in May 2024 with an average of 53 c/gal.  Next Wave was not the only factor driving up isobutane prices as lower-than-expected production and the start of the summer driving season tightened the supply/demand balance and pushed prices even higher.

However, the average month-to-date June spread is much lower at just under 30 c/gal with June 17 posting a spread of only 22 c/gal.  The change in the spread was the result of two factors:  the first is normal butane prices increasing slightly, reaching 93.6 c/gal on June 17 compared to 81.2 c/gal on June 3, an increase of 13%.  The second and primary factor is the decrease in isobutane prices which tanked from 137 c/gal on June 1 to 108 c/gal on June 6.  Prices have since increased, closing at nearly 116 c/gal on June 17.
