The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) published monthly numbers for May on August 31, and the propane numbers showed a large shift. Specifically, exports fell sharply, and storage built at a rapid clip.
U.S. propane exports were reported at 1,655 Mb/d, the lowest level in 10 months (far right bar in graph below). In July 2024, the prior recent low, exports were 1,649 Mb/d. May's exports were down 10% from April and down 17.8% from the previous peak of just over 2 MMb/d set in November 2024. The decrease seen in May's numbers may be attributable to a disruption in exports due to the implementation of Chinese reciprocal tariffs following President Trump's Liberation Day announcements.
