Atlas Energy’s recent commissioning of the Dune Express project, as detailed in Enter Sandman, marks a major milestone in proppant logistics within the prolific Permian Basin. This fully electric, 42-mile conveyor system — designed to replace traditional truck-based sand delivery — began initial operations this week. The project brings efficiency, cost savings and safety improvement to hydraulic fracturing operations in the Delaware Basin. With the Dune Express (route shown in purple on map below) capable of transporting up to 13 million tons of proppant annually, the system reduces road traffic, lowers emissions, and minimizes risks associated with conventional sand hauling. The project remains on track for commercial operation in late Q4, with Atlas leveraging its control over the Kermit (green star) and Monahans (orange star) dunes for optimal sand production.
Dune Express could transform proppant logistics for the Permian Basin, addressing inefficiencies of traditional delivery methods. The reliance on pneumatic or belly-dump trucks is both costly and time-intensive, often leading to delays that can affect well performance. By eliminating long-distance trucking, Atlas positions itself to deliver frac sand more effectively to well sites. Additionally, Dune Express is backed by multiyear supply agreements with major oil companies like BPX Energy, BP's onshore upstream arm.
