The volatility in crude oil prices has translated to similar volatility in propane prices over the past several months. Since late September, Mont Belvieu propane prices have swung from a low of 57.5 c/gal to a high of 83.3 c/gal.

In September, as these changes were taking place, propane’s price as a percentage of crude fell, going from nearly 45% on September 5 to a low of 36% on September 26 (see graph below). In October, however, that trend reversed itself, and propane prices are now at their highest level relative to crude since early March. The sharp step up in the ratio coincides with the start of the shoulder season and what is typically the start of crop drying season and a reduction in storage builds. However, this year has been different with lower crop drying demand in the southern part of the U.S. and strong storage builds reported by the EIA.
