OPEC has reduced its petroleum demand growth estimates for this year after signs that Chinese consumption is easing, according to the cartel’s monthly oil market report.
Global oil consumption is forecast to expand 2.1 MMb/d in 2024 vs 2023, down by 135 Mb/d from its previous month’s assessment. Even so, the growth rate is well above the historical average of 1.4 MMb/d seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For this year, total world oil demand is seen reaching 104.3 MMb/d, buoyed by strong air travel demand and road mobility, including trucking, and healthy industrial, construction and agricultural activities in non-OECD countries. The global growth forecast is still subject to many uncertainties, including global economic developments.
