OPEC is retaining its annual oil demand growth expectations through 2025, pinning it to a positive world economic outlook.
Oil consumption is forecast to grow 2.2 MMb/d in 2024, and 1.8 MMb/d next year, the group said in its latest monthly report. Both targets are unchanged from their previous analysis. These are tied to projections that the world's economy would grow 2.9% for each of those years. Despite some downside risks, the momentum observed in non-OECD economies since the year began, coupled with a rebound in OECD economies, could potentially create an additional upside for global economic growth in 2024 and carry over into 2025.
The group and its allies, known more simply as OPEC+, have been managing market supply after the pandemic severely undermined demand, seeking to support oil prices. OPEC produces about 40% of the world’s crude oil and its members’ exports make up around 60% of global petroleum trade.
