In most U.S. motor gasoline markets, normal butane blending season begins immediately after the federal summer RVP (Reid Vapor Pressure) restrictions end. That is today, September 15. This day marks the official end of the summer ozone season under EPA rules for conventional gasoline areas. Starting September 16, refiners and terminals can begin making higher-RVP winter gasoline, which allows significantly more normal butane in the blend.  (See RBN classic blog Wasted Away in Butane Blendingville).

There are various region-specific rules, including reformulated-gasoline (RFG) areas that have different schedules and restrictions, but generally the percentage of butane that can be blended into motor gasoline is shown in the following table. More butane can be blended in colder areas, and much more butane can be blended in winter months.
