Iraq and Kazakhstan have submitted updated plans to compensate for producing over their crude oil quotas during January-July of 2024, the OPEC cartel said in a statement.
For that period, Iraq had produced an excess of 1.44 MMb/d, and Kazakhstan 699 Mb/d. To offset this, both countries plan to administer higher output cuts from what was announced previously for August 2024 through September 2025. For Iraq, monthly output reductions would range from 90 Mb/d to 120 Mb/d, while that for Kazakhstan at 1 Mb/d to 265 Mb/d (see table below).
Since the pandemic, the OPEC cartel and its alliance have been engaged in production curtailment programs to balance demand and supply while the world recovered from the health crisis. The group would routinely review these efforts to determine compliance with quotas and their next steps. Earlier this month, the group lowered its outlook for oil demand growth amid signs Chinese demand in 2024 was slipping, after holding out for months that global consumption was strong.
