As a follow up to yesterday’s blog, Hey, Hey, What Can I Do, the ban on exports of ethane by Enterprise is already in effect. Enterprise Products Partners issued a press release today saying that three of their ethane cargoes were denied Emergency Authorization Requests (EARs) by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). The total volume denied was reportedly 2.2 million barrels.  Since the original issuance of the notice, the license requirement for butane has been lifted; however, it remains in place for ethane. Per the BIS notice, Enterprise has 20 days to respond with any arguments against its decision on the EARs.

In 2024, the U.S. exported 17% of its recovered ethane with nearly half of that going to China. Export volumes out of the U.S. are expected to continue growing in the coming years, hitting 860 Mb/d by 2026 due to a combination of increased exports to Mexico, Europe and China. Three port terminals are under construction in the U.S. to support the increased ethane exports: two in Port Neches by Enterprise and one in Nederland by Energy Transfer (see Hot to Go!).
