A heat wave has led to several periods of record-breaking power demand across the Lone Star State this summer, according to data collected by the EIA from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the state's grid operator.

Prior to this summer, the previous record for hourly demand was set July 20, 2022, when demand reached 79,830 megawatt-hours (MWh). In 2023, the record for hourly demand was broken every day from June 26-29, and then again on July 12, 13, and 17. Those records were toppled again July 18 as high temperatures persisted and demand soared to 82,579 MWh in the 6 pm hour (see the hourly demand chart below).
