WBI Energy is considering developing a new pipeline that would take natural gas from the Bakken to the east in North Dakota.

The proposed Bakken East pipeline would run 375 miles between Watford City and Fargo, North Dakota and would carry 760 million cubic feet of natural gas daily. It would pass by several North Dakota towns including Beulah, Hazen and Valley City.

There has been discussion about an east-west pipeline for years since the North Dakota legislature approved funding for one in 2021. But since that time, no one had applied for the program.

WBI, which is part of the MDU Resources Group, has been working on this idea for a decade, state pipeline authority officials have said. It’s quite early in the stages. As we’ve detailed in Need You Now, the Bakken requires new infrastructure and pipelines (see photo below of a pipeline).  But these projects can take years or even decades to be constructed due to permits and opposition.
