June Henry Hub gas futures prices briefly jumped to a high of nearly $2.53/MMBtu just before 8 am CT Friday as Columbia Gulf Transmission (CGT) — a major Appalachia takeaway pipeline that also supplies Gulf Coast LNG demand — reported an early-morning lightning strike and fire on its system, at the Corinth Compressor Station in Mississippi. In a notice posted early Friday, CGT issued a force majeure at Corinth, saying volumes through the station had been cut to zero as of the Intraday 1 Cycle for April 28 (typically for flows after 2 pm the same day), impacting about 400 MMcf/d of firm backhaul service through the station. An afternoon update said the operator expects the force majeure to continue for gas day Saturday, April 29, but that it may be lifted as early as the Timely Cycle for gas day Sunday, April 30.

Pipeline data for Friday is still incomplete and the picture will be clearer once late-cycle nominations post overnight for gas day April 28, along with early-cycle flows for Saturday’s gas day. However, as of Friday afternoon, southbound flows through Corinth were down by about 400 MMcf/d to ~1.8 Bcf/d, from the 7-day average of ~2.2 Bcf/d.
