In Western Canada, the gas-directed rig count rose by one to 58 rigs, while the oil-directed rig count dropped by seven to 127 rigs, for the week ended July 2, according to Baker Hughes data. The gas-directed rig count is 12 higher than at this time last year, and one below the prior five-year high for this time of year (see left chart below), while the oil-directed rig count is 34 higher than at this time last year, and 14 higher than the prior five-year high for this time of year (see right chart below).

The one gas-directed rig added was in the Alberta Foothills Front region (see table below).

The seven rig drop in the oil-directed rig count was primarily from Northeast Alberta, where six fewer rigs were active (see table below).
