In Western Canada, the gas-directed rig count rose by 1 to 63 rigs, while the oil-directed rig count gained 13 to 148 rigs, for the week ended July 31, according to Baker Hughes data. The gas-directed rig count is 9 higher than at this time last year, and 9 below the prior five-year high for this time of year (see left chart below), while the oil-directed rig count is 21 higher than at this time last year, and 8 higher than the prior five-year high for this time of year (see right chart below).
The gas-directed rig count rose by 2 in Alberta last week, and fell by 1 in British Columbia (see table below).
The majority of the increase in active oil-directed rigs last week was in the Alberta Foothills Front region (+8, see table below).
