Battery storage was the largest source of electricity supply to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) power grid for more than two hours on the night of April 16, the first time that has happened.
Batteries are seen as a critical part of managing the power grid in states with high levels of renewable generation such as California. As shown in the graphic below, battery storage (purple line) gets recharged during the midday hours when renewable generation (light green line) is at its highest, then sends power back to the grid as solar power ramps down sharply in the evening.
