As reported by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), Alberta’s oil production was 3.68 MMb/d in May 2024, a record for the month (rightmost stacked bars in chart below) and 254 Mb/d higher than a year ago. This was a decrease of 244 Mb/d from April, driven mostly by a downturn in the output of synthetic crude oil of 206 Mb/d. May production of synthetic was handicapped by turnaround work at Canadian Natural Resources’ Horizon upgrader (capacity 250 Mb/d) which spanned May and June, as well as Suncor’s Base Plant upgrader (capacity 350 Mb/d), which also spanned May and June.
