Alberta’s crude oil output in December 2024 reached a record high for any month at 4.26 MMb/d (pink dashed rectangle in chart below), pulling out ahead of the previous record holder set one year ago at 4.19 MMb/d (black dashed rectangle). The latest record breaker represents an increase of 0.06 MMb/d over November (itself a record holder for that month) and 0.07 MMb/d higher than one year ago. The December landmark was driven by a record for synthetic crude oil production of 1.42 MMb/d, surpassing the prior record also set one year ago at 1.40 MMb/d. Output of bitumen in the month at 2.18 MMb/d was a little behind the current record month of October 2024 at 2.25 MMb/d. Industry expectations are that new production records for this category will be set in 2025.
