This summer, like the spring, winter and fall that preceded it, has seen a lot of dealmaking among midstreamers. And not just M&A and divestitures by the folks who gather, transport and process hydrocarbons but a major acquisition — and a rare IPO! — in the produced water slice of the midstream pie. Apples and oranges, maybe, but there are two common themes, namely that bigger is better and that zeroing in on core areas is key. The Permian needs more gas gathering and processing capacity pronto to support the expansion of crude-oil-focused drilling, and one of the Permian’s last privately held midstream companies is stepping up in a big way with the buildout of an entirely new — and very expandable — network in the Midland Basin. In today’s RBN blog, we discuss the impending startup of a new Brazos Midstream processing plant in Martin County, its plans for another Midland-area plant and the company’s already expansive midstream holdings in the Delaware Basin. As you’ll see, Brazos’s strategy echoes that of a well-known predecessor. 

Phillips 66 is probably best known for its fleet of complex refineries, but the Houston-based company also is involved in marketing, chemicals and midstream services. In fact, P66 is one of only a handful of midstreamers offering the full range of “well-to-market” or “well-to-water” NGL services — everything from associated-gas gathering systems and gas processing to NGL pipelines, storage, fractionators and export facilities. And P66’s standing among NGL midstream providers has only been enhanced by the recent doubling of its ownership interest in DCP Midstream.
